Building and mobility converge for a new neighbourhood life

14.06.2023

Starting from the observation that more than 90% of the trips are made in the vicinity, the actors of the building and mobility have looked at a rapprochement between their activities. The goal? Savings through pooling, creation of value for the benefit of the community as well as the users for whom the neighborhood becomes easier (and pleasant) to live.

While the world has become more nomadic today with the evolution of technology and the development of means of transport, the freedom that derives from this is more readily associated with leisure than with commuting—that is, commuting. This is less chosen than suffered by workers who travel on a daily basis. As much as the cost of residential housing, the cost of mobility weighs on the household budget — not to mention the fact that it creates unnecessary congestion, stress and nuisances (including pollution) that undermine the attractiveness and quality of life on a daily basis. Imagining a rapprochement between their fields of intervention, at the end of 2019, building and mobility professionals initiated a reflection aimed at promoting a “mobility-ready building” and a “building-integrated mobility” leveraging available technologies and meeting carbon footprint reduction needs. For example, integrating charging stations for electric vehicles into the frame or including a rental offer for “use” vehicles in carsharing. Such a service also makes it possible to reduce the “dormant” car fleet, thus converting parking spaces made available into additional m2 of pleasure (green spaces, third places, etc.). Beyond participating in the decluttering of cities (60% of the public space in Paris is occupied by mobility) and their decarbonation, this concept of Built-Mobility can restore tranquility at the scale of the neighborhood and the desire for its occupants to reinvest it, by moving differently.

Facilitate proximity mobility

These shared vehicle rental offers such as charging stations contribute to the development of MaaS (Mobility as a Service) alongside the alternatives provided by public transport, by soft modes, etc. In order to be identified as complementary tools, but also to allow users to find in one place all the services offered, digital integration solutions on smartphones exist. Like Moov'Hub, developed by Mobility by Colas. Both global and territorial, this solution thus integrates a tailor-made offer of mobility and parking services. Moov'Hub supports communities in developing the attractiveness of their territory by observing the mobility needs present, by adapting the mobility offers according to the uses, by encouraging the change of behaviour (for example, by favouring certain services during pollution peaks, by reducing autosolism) or by linking sometimes isolated territories by promoting intermodality. One more room in the improvement of the development and sharing of urban space. So, in the life of his neighbourhood.
