Multimodal mobility management: what is it?

06.04.2023

Gone are the days when the automobile bent urban planning to its will and was the key to any social or professional existence. Today, it is time to choose and find alternatives for daily travel. This is made easy thanks to digital tools that simplify the combined use of all means of transport, according to one's desires or itineraries. Here are some explanations.

Urban areas are becoming increasingly sprawling and require more roads to serve them... and in turn are exposed to ever more intense congestion problems if the preferred means of travel remains the car. This is why the mobility authorities (AOM) are promoting the development of complementary infrastructures to relieve the main routes through environmentally beneficial pooling: public transport (train, bus, metro, streetcar, etc.), car-sharing, car-pooling, soft modes for hire (bicycle, scooter), parking lots, etc. All these alternatives not only serve the center and the suburbs, but also provide a more detailed network of links throughout the region. The only drawback is that since each of these offers may come from a different operator, it is not necessarily easy for the user to combine the various services. The multiplication of subscriptions to private and public operators is therefore a deterrent and counterproductive if we want to encourage new multimodal practices.

An app to govern them all

In the collective interest, infrastructure and parking managers and public and private transport operators must work together under the aegis of the public authorities to define a common, collaborative platform: they must "speak the same language" so that users can benefit from a global visibility of their offers. ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems) make a significant contribution by unifying different services by making them interoperable within the same "digital tool" (smartphone application, software, etc.). For the end-user, this allows him/her to be the master of his/her multimodal mobility by defining his/her preferred itinerary, by paying for his/her tickets, parking space, electric car charging, etc., without having to worry about the operator.

This is what Moov'Hub offers, a global and territorial solution designed by Mobility by Colas to develop MaaS (Mobility as a Service). Moov'Hub integrates a tailor-made offer of mobility services and intelligent and shared parking. It supports local authorities in developing the attractiveness of their territory by observing mobility needs, adapting mobility offers according to usage, encouraging changes in behavior (encouraging certain services during pollution peaks, reducing car use) or even linking territories that are sometimes isolated by promoting intermodality. All this with the aim of improving the development and sharing of urban space. As a technical and commercial solution, Moov'Hub pools and simplifies access to the entire range of services in the region. Getting around has never been so easy!
