Truck flows in the city center: what solutions to ease traffic?

23.03.2023

Any urban construction site, but also any delivery service in the city center, induces a comings and goings of vehicles having, in its immediate perimeter, an impact on the traffic. Solutions can be implemented to minimize the consequences and ease traffic congestion.

In a 2022 information report on behalf of the French Commission for Spatial Planning and Sustainable Development, Senators Martine Filleul and Christine Herzog pointed out that urban freight transport was responsible for 20%* of traffic and 20%* of greenhouse gas emissions. Moreover, these figures could increase with the growth of logistics linked to the development of e-commerce or low-emission mobility zones (ZFE-m). In order to anticipate these developments and counter their negative effects, the report recommended better integration of logistics in urban areas, as well as optimizing traffic and parking rules to improve road sharing.

Several recommendations were also put forward. Some of these involved "static" regulation (such as local experimentation with staggered delivery times in major cities); others involved a more "dynamic" approach (such as sharing the rules for the movement and parking of goods delivery vehicles in major cities and transmitting this information to transporters via digital travel assistance services). This option highlights the valuable resource that the use of digital networks and data can provide in contemporary logistics.

QIEVO, a recognized and distinguished reference

Mobility by Colas has just won an award at the TP 2022 Forum in the "Construction site organization and logistics" category for the development of QIEVO - a digital service that optimizes mobility and urban logistics around major construction sites. Designed to optimize mobility in exceptional situations (major urban construction sites, etc.), its digital platform QIEVO organizes the regulation of last-mile logistics flows, guiding delivery drivers through centralized planning to promote "just-in-time" delivery. QIEVO also promotes secure and peaceful logistics by organizing multi-site management, and helps reduce traffic and parking of construction trucks on the public domain, thus preserving the quality of life of local residents. All this while encouraging the ecological and energy transition by improving air quality and the carbon footprint.

Already deployed on a large scale in Lyon on the 50 construction sites surrounding the Part-Dieu train station under the name Réguly - where 1,200 companies have used it, allowing 10,000 trucks to transit through regulation areas and make 100,000 deliveries - QIEVO is also intervening under the name FLUIDEO to assist in the "last mile" regulation of the flow of hundreds of trucks transporting various materials daily to the construction sites of the Athletes' Village for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The appeasement of city centers is therefore within reach for decision-makers...
