Preventive management of the national road and motorway network in the Area 9 - Birmingham

As part of the multi-year motorway maintenance and intervention contract for Area 9 signed with National Highways, Colas Ltd is deployed ANAIS service for a period of one year.

ANAIS was deployed from June 2023 and has been used on approximatily 3,760 kilometres of motorways and national roads around Birmingham.

CONTEXT

Mobility by Colas launched the ANAIS service on motorways in the UK, in collaboration with the British engineering firm Waterman Group. After months of analysis, the data collected by the firm has been adapted to local road conditions to meet the preventive maintenance needs of National Highways.

AIMS OF THE PROJECT

  • To provide the road managers with a digital service based on the use on-board data.
  • Improve the ability to target areas requiring maintenance to make journeys safer and smoother.

HOW IT WORKS

ANAIS is a system for collecting and analysing data on the behaviour of vehicles on the road. It is used to identify warning zones on the road network and to make maintenance recommendations to road managers for their road assets.

FUNCTIONALITIES

  • In-depth analysis of warning zones in the business tool.
  • Triggering and monitoring of field studies.
  • Recommendations for improvements from a leader in road maintenance.

RESULTS

The ANAIS service was implemented over the 2023-2024 period. More than 50 alert zones have been preventively identified, leading the manager to plan preventive infrastructure safety work (markings, signage, maintenance, etc.).
This conclusive deployment is now leading to discussions with National Highways about a possible future deployment on a larger scale and over a longer period.
